Coffin Bay

Coffin Bay

Coffin Bay is about 40 mins drive from Port Lincoln.  It is the home of the famous Coffin Bay Oysters, and I certainly took advantage of that.  We spent the morning at the beach, swimming with the dogs in the beautiful, clean, sandy bay.  We even tried to catch a giant blue swimmer crab.  With his claws extended he was over 60cm!

Looking out over the protected bay, there are plenty of Oyster Leases.  We did a Oyster Farm tour through Oyster HQ.  It was a great experience.  We had to wear waders to get out to the farm.  Here we sat at some tables (in the water) and the farm owner gave us the history of Coffin Bay (and the whole west coast of the peninsula).

We also learnt about the lifecycle of Oysters from spawning to full size.  Most Oysters we eat are around 15months old.  We passed around a 10 year old oysters with a shell about 20cm long.  Shucking oysters was not something I had tried before, and we were given a lesson and then able to shuck our own fresh oysters to eat as part of the tour.

It was a fantastic experience and would recommend it to everyone who visits.  Afterwards, we went up to Oyster HQ and enjoyed lunch on their deck, overlooking the Oyster Farm.  There is also an Oyster VENDING MACHINE, yep, that’s right, you can get your Oyster fix, day or night!  I made sure to vend my 2 dozen fresh oysters for just $30.
