Murphy’s Haystacks, Baird Bay & Point Labatt Seal Colony

On our first full day at Streaky Bay, we headed in through town for a drive, before heading back south to visit a few things we ran out of time to see on our way up from Greenly Beach.

Have you heard of Murphy’s Haystacks? They are a cool rock formations on the western Eyre Peninsula. Technically they are Inselbergs (island mountain). At just $2.00 to enter (it’s on private property), you can wander and climb through the rocks. We spent around 45 minutes here, an easy walk, and you don’t have to walk over any of the rocks.

From Murphy’s Haystacks, we hit the dirt roads and headed out to Baird Bay. A cute little village right on the water, in a massive, calm water bay. From here you can do the commercial tours to swim and play with the Sea Lions. We just came for a visit to see the bay. There is a small free camp here, which was full, with 8 vans/motorhomes set up. The pelicans were very friendly and let you walk up close to them, presumably waiting on some fish!

Driving all along the coast of the bay, we drove out to Point Labatt, where there is a Sea Lion Colony. You will fins both Australian Sea Lions and New Zealand Fur Seals. We were fortunate to see plenty of seals, with 3 young pups playing in the rock pools. The breeding colony is the largest mainland population of Sea Lions in the world.
